Becoming an actor

So you want to be an actor but you don't know where to start. Let me give you some tips on kick-starting your career as an actor.

Tip no.1 - Learn how to act
I know what you're thinking- 'Isn't that obvious?'. Well, to some people, it isn't. They think that all they have to do is be discovered somehow and that the rest will follow. Acting is a craft and an art form, learn it, perfect it and respect it. Book classes at your local acting school so that you can learn. Learn Learn Learn. You need to be able to act to become an actor.

Tip no.2 - Go to where the work is
I'm not instructing you to pack up your belongings and move to Hollywood. I'm just saying that you're not going to find many acting jobs living on a farm in the Free State ( in South Africa, for those of you who don't know). You need to be able to find jobs to build up your contact list and your resume'.

Tip no.3 - Do what it takes
Determination and perseverance are key here. You may not be booked for a job for quite some time and this will take it's toll on you. You have to learn to keep at it until you get it right. If acting is your dream, don't give up on it.

Tip no.4 - Commit to the craft
If you book a job, be grateful and work to the best of your ability. Do not think that you are irreplaceable. If you want to book further jobs, make a good, lasting impression. Work well and be nice to the rest of the crew. Help them and they will help you.

These are just guidelines. Your success depends on you. Work hard and stay focused on your goals.

Best of luck,
Donovan James
